How a November Fundraiser Helps Pay for Parkville's Christmas on the River

Fireworks over the Missouri River are scheduled for around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, December 4. That is the moment most people picture when they think of a Parkville December. Money for that night gets raised fifteen days earlier, on a Thursday in November, inside a historic power plant a few blocks away.

Main Street Parkville's 2026 calendar has eight dated downtown events between now and mid-December. The early events bring people downtown and fill the shelves. A fundraiser supports the big festival. A new tree lighting opens the holiday stretch, and two Shop Hops follow the fireworks.

The October 30 Final Friday is the last one on the 2026 calendar. No Final Friday is listed for November or December, so after Halloween the holiday events take over the downtown schedule.

October warms up the same downtown storefronts

The adult Halloween night has a new name this year. In 2025 it was called Spooky Sip, Shop, & Stroll. That year's listing counted more than 20 participating businesses and held a 7 p.m. costume contest at Pocket Park. The 2026 Creepy Crawl listing runs Saturday, October 17, from 4 to 9 p.m. It promises food and drink specials, themed activities, treats and surprises at participating downtown businesses, and costumes are encouraged. It doesn't name the participating shops yet or say whether the costume contest is coming back.

The next Saturday, October 24, is built for kids and runs in two parts. Main Street Parkville trick-or-treating goes from noon to 4 p.m. Then Ghost Stories at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary runs from 5 to 9 p.m. The page calls that schedule tentative and says activities may change.

These October dates bring people through the same doors the holiday events depend on. Three weeks later, on Saturday, November 14, the Holiday Open House is billed as the day downtown stores put out their new holiday merchandise. Small businesses also decorate and donate the trees raffled at the Gallery of Trees, which ties downtown retail to the fundraiser.

The Thursday that funds the Friday

The 2026 Gallery of Trees is Thursday, November 19, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the historic VFW Post 7356 Power Plant. It has three parts:

  • A live auction of designer Christmas trees and original artwork
  • A raffle of holiday trees and décor decorated and donated by small businesses
  • A "Taste of Downtown Parkville" food experience

Proceeds go to Christmas on the River. Ticket prices weren't posted as of this writing, and the listing says tickets will be available closer to the event. The venue is the same as last year. The 2025 Gallery of Trees was also at the VFW Power Plant, on Thursday, November 20, and its proceeds also went to the river festival.

In Main Street Parkville's 2026 sponsorship package, Christmas on the River is described as a celebration that draws thousands, with a Christmas Market, specialty vendors, Santa photos and a fireworks finale. An event at that scale needs money from somewhere, and the November Thursday is one of the places it comes from. The listings don't say how much the Gallery of Trees raises. Fifteen days separate the auction and raffle from the fireworks.

A second "first" tree lighting in two years

On Saturday, November 15, 2025, the City of Parkville, the Parkville Area Chamber & EDC and Creekside held a tree lighting at Creekside Infield, 15425 Old Town Drive. The Chamber called it Parkville's inaugural tree lighting celebration. Mayor Dean Katerndahl and Santa and Mrs. Claus took part, and the lighting launched a nightly holiday light show that ran from 5:30 to 9 p.m. through January 3.

This year Main Street Parkville has added a Mayor's Tree Lighting, described as a "first annual" event, in Pocket Park on Saturday, November 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. The City places Pocket Park near the intersection of 1st and Main Street in the historic district. The date matters. It falls on Small Business Saturday, so the lighting is the evening end of a day the calendar has set aside for shopping at downtown businesses.

We haven't found anything saying whether the Creekside lighting will return in 2026. Creekside's events page showed no events when we checked, and that alone doesn't confirm or rule anything out. What is confirmed is that downtown now has its own tree lighting, set in the two weeks between the Gallery of Trees and the river festival. The event page says more details are coming.

December 4, the night the money gets spent

Here is what the 2026 Christmas on the River listing includes. It runs Friday, December 4, from 6 to 9:30 p.m., with English Landing Park named as the location. Vocal musicians perform live, and there's a Christmas Market with food and crafts. Costumed characters walk the grounds, and Santa is at his North Pole House. Fireworks over the Missouri River are set for approximately 8:45 p.m. Free round-trip shuttles run throughout the event from the YMCA at 8875 Clark Avenue.

The listing also sends visitors to downtown businesses and Pocket Park, so the festival covers more ground than the park. Last year's layout was different. KMBC reported in December 2025 that the main festival was on Main Street in the parking lot south of First Street, also with a free shuttle and 8:45 p.m. fireworks. If you're planning where to meet friends, check the final 2026 map before you pick a corner. The listing doesn't give general parking instructions, which is a good reason to use the YMCA shuttle.

The festival is also a big night for the shops. KSHB reported in December 2025 that the event has been a Parkville tradition since 1993, and that downtown business owners hoped the crowd would bring their biggest sales night of the year. Patrick Connely, co-owner of the home and décor shop Style and Stitch, was getting ready for his store's first Christmas on the River. He told KSHB:

"It gets eyes on us, being able to create some brand awareness, but also just people coming in and buying that, say, 10 to $20 item, goes a long way."

Small businesses donate raffle trees to the November fundraiser, the fundraiser supports the festival, and the festival brings a crowd of thousands back past their front doors.

After the fireworks, two Thursdays

The season doesn't end on December 4. The Holiday Shop Hops on Thursday, December 10, and Thursday, December 17, bring extended hours, festive open houses and special promotions at many of downtown's 40-plus local businesses. The main calendar describes both as evenings to "sip, shop, and stroll," but the individual event cards list 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Confirm the hours before you plan around an evening visit.

The first date on the schedule is Creepy Crawl, five days from now on October 17. The fundraiser for Christmas on the River is Thursday, November 19, at the VFW Post 7356 Power Plant.

At Northstar Realty, we work out of Parkville, and these downtown dates are on our calendar too. If you're timing a listing photo shoot, an open house or a move around the busy weekends at 1st and Main, call our Parkville team. We can also set up a local market consultation that takes the downtown calendar into account.
